We ended the year by gleaning 360 lbs kale and collards from Verrill Farm in Concord. The greens were well received by the Pine Street Inn and Food For Free. So that wraps up our 2013 gleaning! We are right at our poundage goal, which is a 20% increase from last season. We look forward to connecting with growers over the winter, to establish even more relationships with local farms. A HUGE thanks to everyone who made this season a success. Happy New Year! 53,766 lbs. as of 12/19/12 We made a trip to The Food Project in Lincoln on Wednesday and harvested 144 lbs of kale and picked up 1,200 additional lbs. of winter squash and root crops! We brought all of the produce directly to Food For Free in Cambridge. The weather has been mild so far this winter. If it says this way, we are hoping for some more trips after the new year. We are ALMOST at our goal of 54,000 lbs for the season! 52,322 lbs. as of 12/8/12
We had a fun time in the sun yesterday, harvesting MORE carrots from Waltham Fields Community Farm!! We have a wonderful new partnership with Shared Harvest Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA). How it works is CSA members are invited to purchase extra crops with their share, which we, Boston Area Gleaners, distribute to hunger relief organizations. On Saturday we picked up 525 lbs. of produce from them. We brought some to Food for Free, and will be distributing the rest throughout the week 51,672 lbs.as of 12/8/12
We've been pulling up lots of roots over the last week! We made a trip to Brookwood Farm in Milton to harvest beautiful red beets and rutabaga. If this mild December weather holds up, we will be making another down there in a couple weeks. Tomorrow we will make our third trip of the week to Waltham Fields Community Farm to harvest carrots. So far we have harvested 1,700 lbs of carrots from there, and are hoping to harvest at least another 300 lbs tomorrow. Thanks to all the volunteers that have braved gleaning in cold temperatures, and thanks to all the farmers that are able to keep us in their minds as they wind down for the season! |
