Yesterday, we made one last trip out to Kimball Fruit Farm in Pepperell to pick up 550 lbs. of winter squash and 650 lbs. of potatoes. The staff and farmers there are kind and the farm is beautiful! All those veggies have been distributed to Food For Free, Jewish Family and Children's Services and Medford Community Cupboard. It looks like we will have some warmer weather next week and we already have a couple of trips set up to glean carrots and beets! 46,447 lbs. as of 11/27/12
We made our way up to Pepperell today to harvest 60 lbs of kale and pick up 1,750 lbs. of winter squash! Thank you to all the farmers at Kimball Fruit farm for all your work in growing and harvesting the squash, and thank you to Food For Free for helping us to distribute it to pantries and soup kitchens! Twenty bushels of squash were delivered directly to Food For Free, and we will distribute 15 bushels of squash and 5 bushels of kale to pantries throughout the week. 44,637 lbs. as of 11/26/12
It is the end of the growing season for many farmers, which means we have been busy picking up and gleaning crops they could not sell and that are left in the field. This means a lot of greens. In the past two weeks we have harvested and distributed over 1,000 lbs of kale! In the last couple of days we also harvested broccoli, collards and brussels sprouts, which are in the same cold hearty brassica family. Before thanksgiving we picked up almost 1,500 lbs. of Blue Hubbard squash from Kimball fruit Farm in Pepperell, and we will head out there again tomorrow to pick up another load of assorted winter squash. Until consistent cold temperatures settle in, we will be out in the fields harvesting. Layer up and join us! |
